Rome
Rome is situated in sunny, southern
Italy. Its about two hours away from Florence or Naples. You will
find taking the train in Italy is a bargain, compared to other
countries A one way ticket on the express train to Florence costs
about 35 Euro. Commuter trains are even cheaper. A rail pass is
really not necessary in Italy.
A reservation is needed to board the
Italian Eurostar, which connects Naples, Rome, Florence and Milan. If
you board this train without a reservation, there is a small fine, and
you'll also end up sitting on the floor. Since Italians use their
trains along with the tourists that flood Italy, the trains get really
crowded, so a reservation is often needed. Trains do get sold out a
few hours before departure, so plan in advance.
Always stamp your ticket at the
yellow box located on the platform or the station before boarding,
someone will come around and check your ticket once your on board.
You might notice that many people board the subways and buses in Italy
without validating their tickets. There is only a one in forty chance
of getting caught, but this isn't true on long distance trains, its
not worth the fine, so make sure that you board the right train with a
validated ticket.
It would be a shame to arrive in
Rome, and not take the effort to see Florence, which is about an hour
and half away. If you are really crunched for time, Florence can be
seen in one day, but you won't be able to visit its many museums.
Many people see Rome, Florence and Venice in a one week trip. Milan
is also a world class shopping city, if you are shopaholic, Milan
should be avoided. Milan is also a good base city to the rest of
Europe.
