Paris
Paris is a vacation all by itself,
but if you want to see more of France, you will likely start here.
Paris has several train stations:
- Gare Du Nord - Eurostar, serves
Northern Europe
- Gare L'Est - serves Eastern Europe
- Gare de Lyon - serves the Riviera
and southern France, Italy and western Switzerland
- Gare d'Austerlitz - serves the
west, including Spain and Portugal.
- Gare Saint-Lazare - North and West
France
- Gare Montparneasse - Western
France
Make sure to check your ticket to
make sure that you are departing at the right station. All train
stations are connected by the underground metro. Train tickets can be
purchased at all train stations regardless of the departure station.
Tickets can also be purchased at local SNCF stores throughout France.
Since the lines tend to be long at Paris train stations, purchasing a
ticket at SNCF stores or before leaving the US, will save you time.
Your train ticket must be stamped
before boarding the train at an orange box located on the platform or
in the station. Make sure to arrive a few minutes before you train
departs to avoid any complications. If you are traveling long
distance, you will probably need a reservation to board your train.
Its recommended that you purchase you ticket from a teller and not at
a computer, because a computer can sell you ticket without a
reservation and you may actually need one.
If you are traveling within France,
you can probably get to your destination in under 4-5 hours, the
Riveria being the furthest. If you are traveling Internationally,
consider taking an overnight sleeper train. This will save you time
and money, because you won't have to pay for a hotel night, and you
will arrive by morning. Book overnight trains well in advance,
especially during summer. Don't wait till the last minute, because
the sleep cars might be booked, and you will get a regular seat.
Since France is right in the center of Western Europe, its adjacent to
many counties that you should consider visiting, including Brussels,
Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Spain.
