Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a great base city to
travel from. Not only is a world class city, near Belgium, France and
Germany. A flight to London is only a short distance, and with
discount airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet, flights can be as cheap as
22 Euros.
Amsterdam's central train station,
where you will be departing from, is located right in the city center
near Dam Square or the Red Light District. Just about every tram goes
there, look for a tram that says Centraal Station and that will be the
last stop. You can purchase both domestic and international train
tickets at the train station. International tickets can be purchased
on the upper level, and domestic on the lower level.
When you enter the station you should
look at the black bulletin board for your platform. If you are
unsure, ask someone. Escalators will take you upstairs to your
platform. If you have a domestic ticket, stamp it at the yellow box
next the escalators downstairs. International tickets will be stamped
on board so have it ready. Never lose your ticket, there are random
checks on domestic trains to make sure that everyone has paid their
fare. You will be fined if you don't have a ticket. It just isn't
worth it to save a few dollars.
From Amsterdam, many people continue
on their journey to Paris, which is about a four hour train ride.
Along the way you can also stop in Brussels. Since Brussels is such a
small city, visiting it can be accomplished in a few hours. Don't
forget to visit the Grand Place located in the heart of the city.
Lockers are available at the train station in Brussels so you don't
have to lug your stuff. If you aren't boarding a TGV express train
to Paris from Amsterdam, you will likely have to change trains in
Brussels. If you are under 26 there are discounts available for this
leg of the journey. Once you arrive in Paris, you will arrive at
Paris Gare Du Nord which is connected directly to the Metro to get you
to where you need to go. Hamburg and Berlin are also close to
Amersterdam.
